SCG Regionals Report: Ryan Scott with Ad Nauseam

So, this weekend I decided to play Ad Nauseam at regionals. I believe the deck is very well positioned since it can just win on turn 3-4 making it one of the fastest combo decks in the current meta.

Modern

Round 1: 2-1 vs Titanshift

Game 1:
The first few turns of the game are spent with both of us setting up our combo’s, but with counter magic and a faster combo its over before it starts.

SB for Titanshift
In – 2 Thoughtseize
Out – 2 Sleight of Hand

Game 2:
He’s on the play and I keep a slower hand. I make a desperation spoils and it ends up killing me.

Game 3:
I turn 3 him. playing a Pentad Prism on 2 and exiling a monkey turn 3 to make 6 mana for Angel’s Grace + Ad Nauseam.

Round 2: 2-0 vs WB Control

Game 1:
My opponents’ deck was probably the best part of the round. Not much to write home about here, I kill him dead quickly.

SB for WB Control
In – 4 Leyline of Sanctity, 2 Thoughtseize
Out – 3 Pact of Negation, 2 Pentad Prism, 1 Sleight of Hand

Game 2:
He plays a turn 2 Stony Silence, a Kaya on 3 but I turn 5 cast Ad Nauseam with Spirit guide and use my open white mana to cast Angel’s Grace and win the game.

Round 3: 2-0 vs Amulet Titan

Game 1:
All I remember about this was he had a super slow start and attacks me with Sakura-tribe scout, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Skyshroud Ranger a few times. I have unlife in play, find Ad Nauseam cast it, do the Lightning Storm trick and I end up winning.

SB for Amulet Titan
In – 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Pact of Negation
Out – 1 Phyrexian Unlife, 1 Pentad Prism, 1 Sleight of Hand

Game 2:
I go for the turn three kill, he tries to stop me but isn’t successful. It was over before it started.

Round 4: 2-0 vs UW Control

Game 1:
I go for a very slow turn 5 kill and just force him to have a counter and he doesn’t.

SB for UW Control
In – 1 Pact of Negation, 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Echoing Truth
Out – 2 Pentad Prism, 2 Sleight of Hand

Game 2:
Nothing special here, I go for the cast Ad Nauseam holding priority cast Angel’s Grace. He casts a Mana Leak, I respond with Pact of Negation, he attempts another Mana Leak, but I cast a second pact and that’s all she wrote.

Round 5: 2-0 vs Amulet Titan

Game 1:
Nothing too special, I do my thing and I’m faster than him.

SB for Amulet
In – 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Pact of Negation
Out – 1 Phyrexian Unlife, 1 Pentad Prism, 1 Sleight of Hand

Game 2:
Once again, nothing too special. I’m a faster combo deck.

Round 6: 2-1 vs Dredge

Game 1:
Wasn’t much of a game, Op mulled to 4 (giving me the idea he was on dredge) and I kept a good 7. Then I did my thing and went off before he could ever get his deck.

SB for Dredge
In – 2 Thoughtseize
Out – 2 Pact of Negation

Game 2:
All I remember from here is being at 3 life having Ad Nauseam in hand but not the mana to cast it and play the unlife in the same turn. So, I’m hoping he doesn’t hit a conflagrate or a chill, he dredges an imp and hits his chill to take me to 0 and then attacks for lethal.

Game 3:
I’m on the play and I turn 3 him.

Round 7: 2-0 vs G Tron

Game 1:
Once again, not a whole lot happened here. My OP mulled to 4 and I kept a decent 7. GG me.

SB for G Tron
In – 2 Thoughtseize
Out – 1 Phyrexian Unlife, 1 Serum Visions

Game 2:
Tron doesn’t really have a way of beating my combo if I’m fast enough. And boy was he not fast enough.

Round 8: ID vs UR Pheonix

Round 9: ID vs GB Rock

I make top 8 undefeated in the Swiss with a record of 7-0-2.

Quarter: 1-2 vs UR Phoenix

Game 1:
I mull to 5 on the draw and that’s about where it ends. I don’t do much and die on turn 4.

SB for UR Phoenix
In – 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Pact of Negation
Out – 3 Sleight of Hand

Game 2:
I mulled to 5 again and thought it was going to be game over, but my opp kept a slower hand and didn’t do anything for several turns, many turns and a lucky blind spoils of the vault later I snuck out a win.

Game 3:
This one not much to talk about. I keep a slow hand, flood out and that’s all she wrote.

Wrap up:
So over all I had a great weekend, a decent amount of turn 3-4 kills, I had some of the most favored match ups I could’ve asked for in slower combo decks or just my 90-10 matches. I feel that modern is a format that shifts very hard every other month and you must adapt and respect the changes. Would I play Ad Nauseam after this tournament? Yes, I believe the deck is very solid being proactive in modern is the secret currently. So, playing a deck that’s both hard to interact with and kills your opponents is a win win.
